GANDHI’S INDIA & INDIA’S GANDHI – Curated by Raju Sutar

GANDHI’S INDIA & INDIA’S GANDHI – Curated by Raju Sutar

To the world, India is inseparable from the legacy of Gandhi—a nation born of his ideals. Global perceptions often highlight India’s emergence from colonial suffering into strength, resilience, and sovereignty. Yet within India, Gandhi evokes a far more complex response. We revere him, emulate him, critique him, even reshape and sometimes reject his image in the mirror of our times.

This series is a heartfelt reflection—my personal journey into the abstract, multifaceted idea we call GANDHI.

My artistic journey has long been captivated by the figure of Gandhi. Each of us carries a distinct image of him—shaped by perception, memory, and myth. As I delved deeper into the phenomenon of Gandhi, I encountered a multitude of complex, often contradictory ideas—some I embraced, others I challenged—but all left a lasting impact.

During my travels across the world, I witnessed the deep reverence his name still commands. Even today, his ideals inspire and resonate; there’s a timeless, almost magnetic quality to the way people respond to him.

To me, Gandhi felt like a conceptual artist—employing symbols such as the Salt March and the Charkha not just as political tools, but as powerful visual metaphors. These objects became vehicles for personal and collective reflection, guiding individuals toward self-awareness and socio-political consciousness.

This series is my attempt to interpret Gandhi through a visual lens, using archival photographs and historical imagery to construct a layered, personal reflection on who he was, how he is remembered, and what he continues to  represent.
